Urban Sketcher's Tacloban: Play Pen

I first met Solo Galura, the pioneer of Urban Sketcher's Tacloban way back in May during the WAR (Waray Art Revolution). What first caught my eye were his face paints and then his flyers.

I asked him more about it and I even signed up for the Saturday sketching meet ups. He constantly texted on Saturdays, but as usual, I loved staying home more than going out and socializing.

Their group is now well organized that they had their first exhibit at Cafe Lucia yesterday, September 30. This will run until the end of October. If you have coffee talks sked this month, do it at Cafe Lucia instead and "See the world one drawing at a time".

Let me give you a brief about the Urban Sketcher's Manifesto which I cut out from Solo's flyer:
1. We draw on location, indoors or out, capturing what we see from direct observation.
2. Our drawings tell the story of our surroundings, the places we live and where we travel.
3. Our drawings are a record of time and place.
4. We are truthful to the scenes we witness.
5. We use any kind of media and cherish our individual styles.
6. We support each other and draw together.
7. We share our drawings online.
8. We show the world, one drawing at a time.

If you are interested to play with your pen, join their group for sketching on random Saturdays, you can contact Solo Galura at 09289971750. I know he won't mind me putting his number here since it was already written on the pamphlet for public consumption.

Check out their works! Credit goes to Mark Esperancilla of Cafe Lucia for all the photo's in this entry. Thank you!

“Katsirak”

Having no formal instructions in art, Dante Enage was not daunted in carving his own niche in the art world. Through sheer talent, determination and experimentations with different medium, there is no doubt that he has now risen from the obscurity of the mundane to the artist that he is known today.

The artist will be unleashing the fruits of his artistry and creativity through his second one-man, month long exhibit entitled “Katsirak” which opens on his birthday, April 8,2012 at Cafe Lucia, Rotary Center, Real St., Sagkahan, Tacloban City at 5:30 in the evening.

“Katsirak”, the warm summer days, has always conjured happy memories for all of us. It reverberate the artist’s hopes and dreams after the monsoons, bathing us all with the positivity of the warm sunshine. As such, a sun consistently greets us in every art piece in this exhibit. Each ray tries to evoke our curiosity and fancy.

The exhibit features his recent mixed media assemblage. Circuit boards, screws, junk metal, sand, broken toys and a melange of other found objects are mounted on ply wood and painted with oil and acrylic to create his own otherworldly interpretation of junk art. It is difficult to fathom how much thoughtful consideration really went into this collection. It is truly a testament to Dante Enage’s personal advocacy and struggle of reducing, reusing, recycling and creating beauty out of rubbish.

Guli-At Art Exhibit

Sorry it took me awhile to update this blog.

The Guli-At Kankabatok Art Exhibit is still ongoing. I even heard that there are already a couple of paintings reserved. Ain't that grand?

Here are the pictures:

"WOMAN FROM AMANDIWENG"
MIXED MEDIA by: GE-ANN
Amandiwing is the highest and longest mountain range in Leyte. You can see this along the way to Burauen. Behind this would be Jaro and Ormoc.

"SHOWER OF HUMILITY"
MIXED MEDIA by: LOUI DERAMAYO
Sir Loui is from Chaitanya Yoga. Wonderful brush techniques on this one.

"GAMOT" (ROOTS)
24'X18'
MIXED MEDIA
DANTE ENAGE
See that kubing? It's a traditional jaw harp.

'BIONIC LADY W/ HER PET'

34'X24"
ARCHIE PRISNO
Is this what they call a biomechanical style?

"REDEEMER'
ACRYLIC ON CANVAS
25"X30"
IAN MEJARITO
You have to really stare hard and have a keen eye to find the redeemer here.

"CRUELTY'
ACRYLIC ON CANVAS
24'X18'
JEROLD QUITAN
Jerold's nephew/niece's stuffed toy was the inspiration for this work.

"ONE W/ NATURE"

Inspired by his trip to Agas-agas and Kuting Reef, Mano Ed captured the beautiful sunset of the tropics on this painting.

CRISPIN ASENSI
In his own distinctly Mano Crispin work- puzzle pieces and psychedelic colors!

"LOVE ME, HATE ME"

This graffiti/caricature/cartoon-ish work of Jovens is filled with symbolism. This speaks volumes on the Filipino diaspora.

Dulce Anacion

Two lithographic paintings that tells the story of the beginnings of Tacloban City.

Food for the Soul

Guli-at Kankabato is out with a vengeance this year powered by the local city government of Tacloban. Thus its posters screams I Love Tacloban!
This year is not only a showcase of local bands like the years before but it has also come to embrace different forms of art- writing, visual art and even rap. There is even a longboard and skateboard competition!

The Philippine Annual Gear Show's is on from 12 nn to 7 pm at the following locations:
       March 11, 12 and 14 - Bistro Caliente
       March 13 - Cerebro Bar
       March 15 and 16 - Balyuan Amphitheater

A longboard and skateboard competition will be held on March 11, Saturday, at the Kanhuraw Hill and Magsaysay Grounds from 1 to 5 pm. This will then be followed by the opening of the Art Exhibit at Bistro Caliente at 6 pm. Kick off the Gulia-at Kankabato event will be held simultaneously at Bistro Caliente and Cerebro Bar around 8 pm.

Sunday night will bear witness to:
     > art film showing
     > poetry reading
     > open forum on poetry ( siday perhaps) and songwriting
     > launching of  Daryll Delgado's book, After the Body Displaces Water.
Be at Bistro Caliente before 8 pm because it is going to be a tight fit!
I believe that Leyte, not even Tacloban City has ever had this art experience.

March 13 is Grunge Night at 9 pm in Stereo Sushi. Act like you don't care and dress up in your best grunge outfit and be prepared for dirty guitar sound, strong riffs, and heavy drumming.

The Balyuan Convention Center will host the Guitar Clinic and Jam Session on Tuesday. A 300php registration fee is required though but it is all worth it since you will get to listen and learn from the experts.
Francis Reyes of The Dawn and Louie Talan of Razorback and Kalayo fame will be there. Kakoy Legaspi of Peryodiko, Sinosikat and Rivermaya will be there as well as the great guitar virtuoso Noli Aurillo. On drums would be Reli De Vera of Sinosikat.

The Guitar Festival will start at 6 pm the next day. The Balyuan Amphitheater will be flocked by Leyte, Samar and Biliran's finest guitarists and musicians.

The main event and culmination of the Guli-at Kankabatok Festival will also be held at the Balyuan Amphitheater the next night.

Stomp your feet and feed your soul. Let out your artsy fartsy side for this once in a blue moon gathering free entertainment! Broaden your horizons guys and take part in this event!
